Part of welcoming you back to West Maui is sharing positive updates. Resort communities north of Lahaina were unaffected by the 2023 fire, though we are all building back economically. One of the best ways to support Maui is to visit, including our very special west side resort, Kuleana. There are plenty of opportunities to shop, dine and play locally in West Maui.
Stay
Many Kuleana guest comments describe the resort as a hidden gem. Just 6 miles north of Lahaina town, Kuleana’s oceanfront location is steps from the water, providing gorgeous sunsets with views of distant islands, seasonal whale watching, and renowned for turtle watching. Strolling surfside, you’ll see beautifully landscaped, yet relaxed, resort grounds, a large heated swimming pool, many lounge chairs for soaking in the sun, and barbecue areas with 4 large gas grills, and friendly staff. Play on the outdoor shuffleboard, lobby ping-pong table, or full-sized tennis court. There is even access to one of Maui’s most popular surfing locations. On-Site laundry facilities (some condos have washer/dryer in unit) and free assigned parking round ideal west Maui spot. Destination Maui has a satellite office on-site to answer any questions that arise.
The town of Lahaina is actively rebuilding, and visitors are not directly part of that effort. However, you can help by visiting nearby Lahaina businesses for fun shopping, dining and entertainment.
Lahaina Cannery
This iconic indoor and air-conditioned mall adjacent to the ocean on Maui’s west side took the opportunity after the Lahaina fires to complete extensive exterior and interior renovations. Cannery visitors will appreciate the new decor throughout the center, and an updated food court with new seating, foliage and an entertainment stage. While the food court is adding an assortment of indoor food trucks, and a bar later this year, Cannery visitors can enjoy Jersey Mike’s, Dennys and Starbucks, or other outdoor food trucks now.
The center is also alive with a variety of free entertainment. Live hula performances make their return every Sunday from 1 to 2 p.m. on the entertainment stage. On Wednesdays, Hawaiʻi-inspired crafts can be found in the center of the Cannery from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. Or rock your hips to hula lessons on the stage every Thursday from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m.
Weekends, guests will see a variety of handmade art on the lawn across from Starbucks. Lahaina Cannery will also continue hosting the Lahaina Arts Society every Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the lawn fronting Starbucks starting March 22. Guests can talk story with local artists, view and purchase paintings, glass art, ceramics, photography, woodcarving, jewelry and more.
The mall currently has 14 stores with a variety of gifts that would appeal to visitors, plus 3 variety/grocery stores. Open 10 to 6 daily, see the Lahaina Cannery website for more info at www.lahainacannerymall.com.
Old Lahaina Luau
Maui’s top rated luau has reopened in the same location, on the ocean across from Lahaina Cannery Mall. Old Lahaina Luau holds a special place in the hearts of many. Not only is this luau heralded as Maui’s most authentic, but it’s also one of the island’s oldest (open since 1986) and most beloved celebrations. See www. oldlahainaluau.com for reservations, which are recommended well in advance.
Lahaina Gateway Center
Lahaina Gateway Center is home to a variety of shops that cater to all your needs, from unique souvenirs to everyday essentials. The center has become a gathering place where you can find local artisans showcasing their crafts, which makes it an excellent spot to pick up one-of-a-kind gifts and support Maui’s creative community.
An example of unique spots is Khloellas Garden, selling outdoor furnishings, home decor, pet accessories, gifts and more. Mahina has island inspired clothes for adults and kids, while Foodland Farms provides an upscale, fresh approach to food shopping, or picnic and bbq supplies. Their selection of locally sourced products ensures that you are supporting Maui’s farmers and producers with every purchase. Locals know they have dakine fresh poke and poke bowls around. You’ll know by the long line around lunch time!
When it comes to dining, Lahaina Gateway Center does not disappoint. The variety of eateries here ensures that there is something for everyone. There is the Lahaina version of Kihei Caffe, one of the best places for Loco Moco and other island favorites, spacious seating, and speedy takeout service. For a sweet treat, drop into Island Cream Company and experience their innovative flavors and fresh, local ingredients. Carnivores will dig Teddy’s Bigger Burgers- they really are generously sized. See www. lahainagateway.com for more info.
Marking time
It has been just over a year since the devastating Lahaina fires. While we appreciate your compassion and aloha, we also invite you to west Maui for fun, food, shopping, and an amazing stay at Kuleana, one of the best oceanfront resort values around. Lahaina town will never be the same, but it will rise again.
